A Retail Worker's Guide to Surviving Black Friday

It's that time of year again! The leaves are falling, the pumpkin spice latte is back, and stores are gearing up for the biggest shopping day of the year - Black Friday. For retail workers, this can be a stressful time. Here are some tips on how to make it through the next few weeks with your sanity intact.

1. Start stocking up on caffeine now.

You're going to need it. Seriously. Retail work is draining enough on a normal day, but throw in the added stress of holiday shoppers, and you're going to need all the coffee (or tea, or energy drinks) you can get. Make sure to get enough rest, too; you'll be running around all day and you don't want to run out of steam halfway through your shift.

2. Wear comfortable shoes.

This one seems like a no-brainer, but it's worth repeating. You will be on your feet for long periods of time and you don't want your feet to hurt by the end of the day. Wear shoes that you know are comfortable and that won't give you blisters. Pro tip: bring an extra pair of socks just in case. Nothing is worse than having sweaty, uncomfortable feet inside shoes that are already starting to rub you the wrong way.

3. Take breaks when you can.

It's important to stay hydrated and take breaks when you can, even if it's just for a couple of minutes. Step outside for some fresh air if you can, or find a quiet place in the store where you can take a few deep breaths and regroup before going back out into the fray.

4. Keep your sense of humor.

One of the best ways to get through a long shift is by laughing whenever possible. If a customer says something funny, laugh along with them (even if they're not actually being funny). If another coworker cracks a joke, join in (even if it's at their expense). Laughter is great stress relief and it will help make the time pass more quickly. Just don't laugh too hard—you don't want to end up like this guy.

Working retail on Black Friday doesn't have to be a nightmare if you go in prepared. Stock up on caffeine, wear comfortable shoes, take breaks when you can, and most importantly, keep your sense of humor throughout the day. By following these simple tips, you'll make it through alive...and maybe even have a little fun along the way!
